
James Larry Batton Sr., 82, of Alma, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 10, 2025, at his home after an extended illness.
He was lovingly cared for in his final days under the support of Comfort Care Hospice.
He was born October 6, 1943, in Blackshear to the late James “Jim” Batton and Elizabeth Fuller Batton. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and friend, whose life was defined by hard work, perseverance and an unwavering love for family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie Pearl Batton; son, James Larry Batton Jr.; grandson, Marvin Batton; great-granddaughter, K’Shabre Batton and siblings, Valya Jackson, Willie McByrd, Robert Batton, George Batton, Rosby Batton, Riley Batton and Johnny Delane Batton.
He began his life of labor as a young farmer before dedicating 20 years of faithful service to Golden Poultry in Douglas. After retirement, his strong work ethic continued as he owned and operated his own lawn service for 19 years. He was known for his dedication, reliability and willingness to lend a helping hand to others.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his seven children, Mae Della Smith, Mary Batton, Debra Batton, Anthony Batton, Aimee Batton, Renota Batton and Danielle Batton; his siblings, Clifton Batton, Emma Jean Foster, Franklin (Billie) Batton, John Lewis (Sandra) Batton, Carylon Deverger, Helen Faulk and Mae Francis Wright; uncle, Easop (Betty) Fuller; 31 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He also shared a special bond with his dear friend, Janie Bussey, and was a father figure to four children whom he lovingly helped raise, Brandon, Natoya, Angela and Christina Bussey.
He will be remembered as a man of strength, wisdom and humility. His presence brought comfort, his words carried guidance and his life offered an example of faith, resilience, and unconditional love. To his family, his memory will remain a treasured gift and to his friends, he will forever be a light of inspiration.
Though he has departed this earthly life, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Zion Chapel Baptist Church, 513 East 14th Street, Alma.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, from the Zion Chapel Baptist Church in Alma.
Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Alma.
