Pierce Co. Recreation Board Highlights

(The Pierce County Recreation Board discussed and/or voted on the following during their monthly meeting Tuesday, October 7.)

New recreation complex: Recreation Director Brown reported design work is still underway for the proposed new recreation complex and the renovations to the Ware Street Park. Carter and Sloope has been working on plans for the project for several months.

Update on Tiger Field project: Director Brown reported new lighting has been installed at Tiger Field and the facility is being used for the department’s football program. The lighting is part of overall improvements set for Tiger Field as part of a $343,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Matching Grant the county received. County Chairman Neal Bennett said bids for other phases will be let soon. Additional phases will include paving the track and improving parking.

Director’s report: Director Maureen Brown reported football and cheerleading, soccer and volleyball are now underway at the department with both Tiger Field, Ware Street and the Pierce County Gym in use. Brown announced flag football would begin later this season. She also gave dates for upcoming district and all star competitions. The department has collected $13,791 in gate receipts and $5,214 in concession sales so far this season from all sports. Brown also reported on an idea to bring in local food trucks to compliment the concession sales. Brown suggested the food truck vendor would pay a flat fee or give a percentage of sales to the recreation department. Recreation Board Chairman Chris Wright said he was “leery of the plan without having a policy in place.”

Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, November 4, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
