Commissioners briefed on new program for Road Department

NAHUNTA — County Manager Joey Cason briefed commissioners of a plan which could help with keeping the county’s rural roads graded.

According to Cason, the plan divides the county into six sections north of Hwy. 82 and south of Hwy. 82.

“We’re going to have the all the grader operators meet and review all of their roads,” Cason said during the October 7 work session. “We’re also working with Caterpillar, because of using their equipment, with a program to be able to see where the graders are.

“Hopefully by the end of the year, we’ll have online an example of where we’re grading, what we’re doing and when we’re doing it. The reality would be someone calling and asking about the grading of their road would be able to see chart stipulating when we typically grade roads.

“We’re working hard to get that done now. We’ve got the map, we’ve got it all designated and we know what’s in each section.” Cason said the recent rains have helped pack the sandy areas around the county.

The county manager updated commissioners on the new pickleball courts at the Brantley County Recreation Department.

“Asphalt will be poured tomorrow (Wednesday, October 8),” said Cason. “We’ve saved at least $9,000 doing the preliminary grading work and the soil preparation there. We did most of that site work as well. The road department’s done a phenomenal job.”
