The Nahunta City Council discussed/voted on the following agenda items during the October 6, 20025 monthly meeting.
• RFP for sanitation: The council approved an RFP (Request for Proposal) for sanitation with Ryland Environmental in the amount of $15,075 which was the lowest bid received.
• Community Facilities Direct Loan/Grant Program: Council members approved a Community Facilities Direct Loan/Grant Program with USDA.
This program provides affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas. The funds can be used to purchase, construct, and/or improve essential community facilities, purchase equipment and pay related project expenses.
The interest rates are currently as follows: the Poverty Rate is 4.50 percent, the Intermediate rate is 4.875% and The Market Rate is 5.25%.
• Amend FY 20252026 Police Department budget: The council made a resolution to amend the FY 2025-26 Police Department Budget. Two salaries need to go in for two positions that were created after the budget was approved.
• Beer/Wine license: Council members also approved a Beer/Wine license for Chet Brazell for his establishment The Local.
It was acknowledged Brazell has met all the necessary requirements to open The Local. It is expected to open its doors at the end of October.
• Car Show: The council approved to have a car show once two twice a year. Administrative Assistant Jason Wofford, who was in charge of the car show during Nahunta’s Centennial over the summer, recognized its success.
He asked the council for a motion to hold a car show more than one time during the year. This motion was subsequently approved.
• Nahunta Police Department report: Police Chief Brad Todd read the monthly report for September’.
The chief said NPD personnel answered 334 E911 calls, made 233 traffic stops, wrote 114 citations, issued 119 warnings, filed 11 incident report, filed four accident reports and made six drug-related arrests.
Chief Todd also had a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) passed between the police departments of Nahunta and Homestead. This MOU is designed to be a cooperation between both agencies.
The offices in Nahunta work with Homestead part-time and this MOU is agreement in case they need to use each other’s resources and equipment. The motion passed.
• Water/Street Department: Jeremy Ryan gave the department report for September which included 686 work orders completed for the month of September.
Ryan also spoke on the progress he and his team has made including destroying four beaver dams. He also spoke on the new sewer plant which is coming along well.
“The force main is in and we’re working to get sludge out so it won’t be so expensive to dredge,” Ryan said.
• City Clerk/Mayor Report: City Clerk Angie Wirth reminded the council about the upcoming Trunk or Treat scheduled for Thursday, October 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The next Nahunta City Council meeting is Monday, November 3 at 7 p.m.
