Election sign guidelines released

With early voting starting next week for the November 4 General Election, residents are reminded there are guidelines to follow in Waycross for campaign signs.

There are limits on the size of signs depending on their location in residential or commercial areas. Signs are limited to six square feet, i.e., 2 feet by 3 feet, in residential districts and 32 square feet, i.e., 4 feet by 8 feet, in commercial areas.

Signs are limited to private property only with approval of the owner. No signs are allowed on right of ways for city or state roadways.

Signs can’t be attached to poles, fences, rocks, trees, or public buildings.

They can not block any building exits, either doors or windows. They can’t be placed on trailers parked to face public roadways.

If a sign is in violation of any standard, the city will notify the candidate. If the issue is not corrected, the city may remove the sign.

Removed signs can be picked up at the parking lot side of City Hall or the public works facility on Satilla Lane.

Only property owners are permitted to remove signs from their property. Moving or taking signs from any other location by anyone else, is theft and subject to prosecution.
