Nearly three dozen of Jim Miller’s friends and family recently helped the retired manager of WKUB celebrate his 91st birthday during a luncheon at the new Zel’s restaurant. His daughters, Paris Thomas of Leesburg and Tamza Brumley of Duluth, hosted the party. Fiancee Nickie Carter and longtime friend Delorce Brannon joined Miller at the head table as “Uncle Dave” Griffin serenaded the gathering with a few selections. Leaving the family farm near Eastman in the 1950s, Miller took his guitar into the world to seek fame and fortune, and wound up playing as a session musician with some of country music’s greats before settling into a career in radio. He came to Waycross in 1974 in the employ of WACL. From 1989 through 2019 he worked at Mattox Broadcasting (WKUB). His former boss Troy Mattox and his wife Sue shared in the celebration.
