Special to the WJH
Waycross Aglow Lighthouse welcomes missionary/evangelist Dr. John Powell as special guest speaker for its worship Saturday, October 11.
The program begins at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of Our Beloved Church, 1700 Osceola Avenue.
Dr. Powell was raised in Waycross and graduated from high school in 1973. After attending Medical College of Georgia, he served as a pediatrician in the U.S. Army. He then opened a private pediatrics practice in Waycross and also began serving as director of a short-term medical mission ministry.
In 1993 he sold his practice and moved to Venezuela as a full-time missionary and was Pastor of Iglesia Torre Fuerte (Strong Tower Church) in Calabozo Venezuela for 16 years. He is married to Elsa Hernandez Powell and is the father of two children, Mike and Gaby.
“We’re always encouraged by hearing how God is moving in the hearts of people around the world,” said Rosalind Eskew, local Aglow president. “Dr. Powell is training and mentoring young men and women in South America and beyond in church leadership and to be salt and light in their towns and villages in sometimes very hostile situations.”
He and his family currently live on a mission in Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Powell is leading Global Missions Initiative working to establish a foundation for revival in Venezuela and other key South American countries. His desire is to mobilize God’s people to take the Gospel of the Kingdom to all nations and people groups in the world.
