Pierce County High School’s (PCHS) annual Sound of Silver Invitational marching band competition took place October 4. The winner and overall champion was Appling County High School. First runner up was Southeast Bulloch. Second runner up was New Hampstead.

Eleven different bands competed before multiple judges who assessed different elements of each program, including the drum major, percussion, the auxiliary and the band’s performance overall. Schools that participated in the event were East Laurens, Coffee, Portal, New Hampstead, Hilliard, Dodge, Vidalia, Sumter, Irwin, Southeast Bulloch and Appling.

As host of the yearly event, PCHS does not officially compete but after spending all day helping run the event, the Sound of Silver marching band still managed to put on an energetic exhibition performance prior to the awards being announced The Sound of Silver’s program theme this year was Legends of Rock, featuring music by Elvis, the Beatles, Radiohead and Aerosmith.

Several performances were energetic and colorful much like these twirling flags during East Laurens’ performance.
Sometimes it was all about the solos like this one during the Dodge County Marching Chief’s portion of the competition.
