Brantley County High School’s Avery Crews has been selected to serve on the Georgia Department of Education’s student advisory council for 2025-26 State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced his selection of students at the end of last week. This is the second time in five years a Brantley County student has been chosen to serve on this distinguished committee and represent our state interests.

“This council is about hearing directly from students – the ones experiencing our schools every day,” said Woods. “These outstanding young leaders bring experiences and perspectives from every corner of our state, and their viewpoints and ideas will guide our work, ensuring we stay focused on what matters most: supporting every student’s success.

“I look forward to learning from them and working together throughout the year.”

Crews was selected from over 1,235 applicants to serve on the council. She will be one of 79 students providing valuable feedback about state policies and practices in classrooms across the state.

Crews will serve as an ambassador in the local community and engage with students across the state in discussions and feedback on serving needs in public schools across Georgia.

She will bring a valuable perspective to the table with her perspective of the rural student role in south Georgia.

In addition to gaining insight into the decision making process at the state government level, students in this council work within the community and develop leadership and communication skills that they can use in future careers.
