Bridge project ready to move to other lanes

Special to the WJH

The traffic pattern is changing on the U.S. 84 bridge over the Satilla River at the Ware/Pierce County line.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced last week that beginning today (Wednesday, October 1) traffic would move to the newly constructed north side of the Satilla River and Overflow Bridges that has been under construction for more than 18 months.

The lane shift was scheduled to begin overnight weather permitting to minimize the impact to the traveling public, the DOT said.

Work on the project now will move to the south side of the span for the final phase of upgrade, which is expected to be completed sometime in 2027.

During traffic shifts, drivers can expect travel delays due to lane adjustments and relocation of heavy equipment and materials.

This traffic shift is an essential part of Georgia DOT’s ongoing effort to replace and improve the Satilla River crossing on US 84. The public’s patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated as GDOT works diligently to complete the major infrastructure project for the two communities.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, allow extra travel time, obey speed limits and watch for workers in the area. Responsible driving is key to ensuring everyone's safety.

GDOT plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. It is involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs.

The state agency helps local governments maintain their roads, and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility.
