Special to The Beacon NAHUNTA — A Nahunta woman was arrested Friday morning by the Nahunta Police Department and faces four drug charges.

The NPD Crime Suppression and K-9 Unit responded September 26 to a call from a concerned citizen regarding suspicious activity near a local business. Captain Brandon Todd and K-9 Quick located a vehicle at approximately 9:30 a.m., being operated by Kandi Diane Mancil, 36, of Nahunta. During the course of the stop, Captain Todd developed reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. When consent to search the vehicle was denied, K-9 Quick was deployed for a free air search of the vehicle. K-9 Quick gave a positive indication for narcotics. A subsequent search uncovered more than an ounce of methamphetamine, along with fentanyl and Schedule IV pills.

Mancil, who has an extensive criminal history, was taken into custody without incident. She was charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession of Fentanyl, Possession of Schedule IV Pills and Possession of Drug-Related Objects.

Bond was denied in the case.

Mayor Marty Lee praised the importance of community partnership.

“When citizens see something out of the ordinary and speak up, our officers listen and act,” he said. “Today’s arrest is proof teamwork between our citizens and our officers is making Nahunta safer. Together, we are fighting to keep these dangerous drugs away from our families.”

Chief Brad Todd also issued a public safety reminder to parents.

“We caution families to be extremely careful in public areas, especially parking lots.” said the chief. “Something as simple as a dollar bill on the ground could be contaminated with fentanyl. Those struggling with addiction may discard items without thinking about the danger to children.

“Offenders may not care, but we do. The Nahunta Police Department is committed to protecting our citizens and keeping our children safe.”

The Nahunta Police Department thanks our community for their vigilance and partnership as we continue working together to combat the spread of dangerous drugs.
