WPD seeks leads for ’23 murder

The Waycross Police Department is seeking the public’s help in its investigation of the 2023 murder of Da’Quavin Wimberly.

Assistant Waycross Police Chief Danny Hampton said Monday the investigation of the shooting February 9, 2023 in the 2400 block of Spurgeon Avenue that led to Wimberly’s death remains active. He said detectives are following up on all information received to this point related to the incident and fully investigating any leads.

If anyone has any information, they’re asked to contact WPD detectives at (912) 287-2921 or call the automated tip line at (912) 287-2924 if they wish to remain anonymous, Hampton said.

The murder of Wimberly, who was 19 at the time of his death, was the first in the city in 2023.

Officers responded to the Spurgeon address after receiving a call regarding gunshots in the area, Hampton said.

Officers found Wimberly injured from a gunshot at a residence. He was transported to Memorial Satilla Health by Ware County EMS, and was later pronounced deceased.

There was information of a small white or light color vehicle that was in the area at the time of the incident that may have been damaged during the crime, and may have bullet holes in the side of it, Hampton said.
