Flu shots are now available at the Pierce County Health Department.
Chandler McGee, communications director of the Southeast health unit, encourages everyone to get the flu shot.
“The flu shot is your best protection and is available at your local county health department,” he said.
In the U.S., flu season typically spans the fall and winter months, with flu activity usually starting in October and peaking between December and February. Although influenza viruses circulate yearround, now is the time to prepare and protect yourself.
McGee points out a yearly flu vaccine is the first line of defense against the flu and is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for everyone age 6 months and older. Vaccination is especially important for certain high-risk groups, including young children, pregnant women, adults aged 65 and older and individuals with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes or heart disease).
Immunizations are available as a walk-in service at all health departments within the district.
“We kindly ask that you bring a form of identification and your insurance card (if you have coverage) when you come to receive a flu vaccine,” said McGee Visit www.sehdph.org/our-counties/ to find a health department location near you.
