Volunteer Fire Departments have busy weekend

Brantley County’s Volunteer Fire Departments were busy weekend with reports of three fires, three medical calls and a wreck with injuries.

Fortunately for the fire fighters, there were no injuries from any of the sites including no residents injured.

Calvary VFD, Hoboken VFD and Nahunta VFD were dispatched to a structure fire at 1:45 p.m., Sunday, September 14 to Deer Run Road in the Calvary District, according to Nahunta Chief Marty Lee.

The fire consumed a shed and part of a yard. Firefighters were on scene approximately one hour.

While clearing up, all three stations were dispatched to a brush fire off Hwy. 121 South near High Bluff Road.

Unattended burn piles quickly spread to 12.5 acres. Georgia Forestry units also helped get the fire under control. Lee said units were on site for nearly three hours.

Nahunta VFD and Hoboken VFD responded to a third fire was reported at approximately 5:30 p.m., in Nahunta behind the Knox Hotel on Florida Avenue. Lee said there was a report of a female possible in the burning structure.

Firemen found a burning trash pile which spread to the brush near two structures. Fireman were on scene for nearly two hours with only a shed being lost to the fire.

Hoboken VFD personnel also responded to a medical call prior to the first fire Sunday.

The Nahunta VFD worked two medical calls Saturday. There was also a wreck with injuries in Hickox as well as a fire alarm in Hickox.

There was no report available for the wreck.

“We appreciate our volunteers spending the time away from their families and the response of Hoboken VFD, Nahunta PD, Brantley SO, Brantley EMS, and the City of Nahunta, as well as communications from Brantley E911,” said a representative with the Nahunta VFD.
