Nahunta highlights

The City of Nahunta discussed/voted on the following agenda items during the Tuesday, September 2 monthly meeting.

Prior to approving the September 2 agenda, Councilman Andrew Altman made a motion to table two new business items until the Tuesday, October 6 meeting. The motion passed with Councilwoman Crystal Johns and Mayor Pro-Tem Bruce Davsi voting for.

Mayor Marty Lee and Councilwomen Deloise Anderson were not in attendance.

• Public Participation: Former Mayor Barbara Maefield shared with the council the a meeting with an area aging agency with approximately 150 residents being fed breakfast. Every precinct in the 11th District had a breakfast for the its elderly residents.

Councilman Andrew Altman said the Senior Center is doing meal deliveries again. He sent a flier to be shared on the City’s Facebook page. Altman said residents can sign up for meals.

“They also asking for donations if anyone wants to sponsor an elderly person in in the county,” said the former mayor.

• RFPs for sanitation: Councilman Altman said the city had sent out Request for Proposals (RFPs).

“I think the city manager (Tom Wirth) is checking to see if the RFPs we received last year will still be honored for those same prices,” said Altman. “He’s also going to get updated prices with the sanitation companies because our contract ends at the end of this year. We want to have a little bit of time for discussion.”

• Re-certification for City of Ethics: City Clerk Angie Wirth told the council it was time for the City of Nahunta to recertify for the City of Ethics through GMA (Georgia Municipal Association).

“We need to approve the resolution affirming the City of Nahunta’s commitment to the ethics principles of Georgia Municipal Association and to request request recertification as a certified city of ethics,” she explained. “It serve others, not ourselves. We use resources with efficiency and economy, treat all people fairly, use the power of our position for well being of our constituents and create an environment of honesty, openness and integrity.”

Davis asked for a motion receiving one from Councilman Altman “that we go with this City of Ethics and recertify with the Georgia Municipal Association City of Ethics” Councilwoman Johns seconded the motion with it passing 3-0.

• Nahunta Police Department report: Chief Brad Todd gave the NPD’s monthly report for August.

Todd said his officers made 235 traffic stops and issued 163 citations and gave 72 warnings. There were 36 incident reports, worked nine traffic accidents and made 21 arrests.

“I want to commend the police department for doing a great job,” stated Davis. “I think we should really look into getting them some more help. We are really growing.”

• Public Works Department: The city’s Public Works Department completed 582 work orders for August.
