A good friend can make you feel super

In my column a few weeks ago, I talked about the surprise of seeing comic books on sale in a local convenience store. I guessed it was a marketing tie-in for the new Superman movie. Well, no pun intended, Superman must be in the air, as I recently got a second surprise with a capital S.

While covering an event for the paper, I ran into a friend I don't see or talk with often enough. He knew I would be there for the paper and brought me some Superman comics!

My friend was thinning out his collection and had come across some duplicates. Having recently turned 49, I had asked if it was meant as a late birthday present for me. It wasn’t. He said it was just because.

I had to cover the event and then rush home to cook dinner, so I didn’t get a chance to tell them how much their gift lifted my spirits.

Given the current state of our country and the world, I haven’t written many columns recently. I don’t have much to say that would brighten these dark times, but I felt this small act of kindness deserved recognition.

The kindness and generosity of good friends never fails to amaze and humble me. To me, my friend was Superman that day. Maybe tomorrow, I can be Superman for someone else.
