New recreation complex: Recreation board chairman Chris Wright gave a report on the proposed new recreation complex and the renovations to the Ware Street Park.
Update on Tiger Field project: County Manager Raphel Maddox and Director Maureen Brown reported work is progressing on the improvements to Tiger Field, but have not yet been completed. Installing of new lighting is underway. The lighting is part of overall improvements set for Tiger Field as part of a $343,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Matching Grant the county received. The county will have to match the grant.
Director’s report: Director Maureen Brown reported a total of 431 children signed up for fall sports programs at the department. Football has 177 participants, soccer has 137, volleyball has 68 and cheerleading has 43. Football numbers increased by two, soccer was up by eight and volleyball was up by five. Cheerleading declined by two Brown reported implementation of the Rec Desk app for sign ups was very successful. “We only had five sign up in the office. Everyone else signed up with the Rec Desk app,” she said. Brown said the season is tentatively scheduled to start Sept. 15. Brown reported the department received a grant from the Atlanta Falcons in the amount of $1,308 for the rec soccer program. She also announced recreation night at the Bears football game Sept. 19 and the homecoming parade coming up on Sept. 22. Brown also reported on the smash event held recently and also announced the department received a check for $220 as revenue sharing for the Brazilian soccer camp held this summer.
Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
