UNDATED — Mrs. Josephine Allen Cowart affectionately known as “Aunt Jo”, 89, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2025 at her niece’s residence in Waycross.

Mrs. Cowart was born in Bacon County to the late Gus Allen and Mamie Mobley Allen. She retired from the Southeast Health District with the State of Georgia as an administrative assistant to the District Health Director. Mrs. Cowart was a longtime member of Deenwood Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cowart was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Cowart; a son, Robert Michael Cowart; three brothers, LeRoy Allen, Wiley Allen, and Ernest Allen; five sisters, Iva L. Matthews, Katie Taylor, Jessie Mae Stewart, Ida M. Matthews, and Jeanne Sapp.

Mrs. Cowart is survived by her sister, Mamie Wright of Acworth, GA; and four nieces, Cammy Smith (Mike) of Waycross, Cyndie Dixon (Larry) of Waycross, Connie Adams (Stan) of Douglas and Christy Miller (Joe) of Waycross; a brother-inlaw, Larry Cowart (Susan) of Waycross; her friend and neighbor, Camilla Denton of Waycross; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to her caregivers, Doris Watson and Arlena Scott for helping care for Aunt Jo.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2025 at the Music Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow in Kettle Creek Cemetery. The family will begin receiving friends at Music Funeral Home Thursday at 1 o’clock.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, GA’31501.
