FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Wynn Carswell Plowden, 79, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., left this earth to lead a choir of angels August 10, 2025, at Community Hospice of Fernandina.

Mrs. Plowden, known affectionately as “Auntie” by her family, was born December 13, 1945, in Waycross as the youngest daughter of Wynelle Lance Carswell and Roscoe Nickles Carswell. She began using her God-gift of singing “as a baby.”

Mrs. Plowden graduated from Waycross High School and received her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Music from Valdosta State University, where she starred in several musicals, including “Carousel” and “Oklahoma!”

Mrs. Plowden was teaching school in Merritt Island, Fla., when she met John Plowden, whom she married in 1972. John and Wynn moved around the United States for John’s work in the aerospace and defense business for Rockwell/ Boeing, which brought them to New Mexico, California, Mississippi, and then back to Florida. A gifted soprano, Mrs. Plowden sang wherever life took her – whether that be in musicals, church choirs or local events.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Rita Gray and Gloria James, as well as three brother-inlaws, Tommy Gray, Sr., McCoy Carter and Billy James.

Mrs. Plowden is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, John Plowden of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; one sister, Nickie Carter of Blackshear; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and wife Peggy Plowden of Edison; nephews, Will James, John (Holly) James and Rodney (Dana) James, all of Blackshear, Brandon (Darcy) Plowden of Birmingham, Ala., Derek (Jennifer) Plowden of Helena, Ala., Coy Carter of Jacksonville, Fla., Roman (Serenity) Carter of Blackshear and Tommy Gray, Jr., of Waycross; nieces, Andrea DeLoach of Blackshear, Kim (Carey) Fields of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Keena (Jerry) Millican of Moultrie and Maurice Barber of Waycross; a godchild, Dr. Amanda Japp of Orlando, Fla.; as well as several cherished grandnieces, grandnephews, and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 12, 2025 at 2 p.m., in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
