Pierce County has a new veterans service organization with the founding of American Veterans (AMVETS) Chapter 1857.
AMVETS Chapter 1857 was officially approved and chartered at the 79th annual AMVETS National Convention held last week in Greensboro, NC.
Guylee Washington Jr., inaugural commander of Pierce County’s new AMVETS Chapter 1857 was presented with the charter.
Charter members include Washington Jr., Guy Lee Washington, Peter Moore, Darrell Smith, Francine Graham, Willie Roach, Romona Poole, Robert Gibbson, Tony Batten and Jerome Lincoln.

AMVETS’ official motto is “Veterans helping veterans'. The national organization also uses the slogan, 'Serving American Veterans'.
AMVETS’ mission is to enhance and safeguard the entitlements for all American Veterans who have served honorably and to improve the quality of life for them, their families, and the communities where they live through leadership, advocacy, and services. They achieve this through various programs and services aimed at supporting veterans and their families.
AMVETS’ core mission revolves around: Advocacy: Fighting for the rights and benefits of all veterans.
Service: Providing direct assistance and support to veterans and their families.
Community Engagement: Working to improve the quality of life for veterans and their communities.
Some key areas of focus for AMVETS include: National Service Officers (NSOs): Providing free advice and assistance with VA claims.
Programs and Services: Offering a wide range of support, including healthcare, housing, education and job training.
Community Outreach: Engaging with local communities to promote awareness and support for veterans.
Americanism Programs: Educating youth about American history and patriotism.
