WPD Crime Investigations to get new offices

The Criminal Investigations Division of te Waycross Police Department will have a new temporary home after action last week by the Waycross City Commission.

Commissioners approved a resolution for a two-year lease on a property at 1048 Alice Street to move the unit from its current offices in the aging building at 407 Pendleton Street.

The resolution was among five the commission passed during its bi-monthly meeting Tuesday, August 19 in City Hall.

Another approved the sale of two small parcels owned by the city that earlier had been surplussed, and two others OK’d the sale of five public works vehicles and a collection of fire hoses to the highest bidders on govdeals.com. The last moved the commission’s first bi-monthly meeting of next month to Tuesday, September 2 to accommodate the Labor Day holiday.

Commissioners also heard and approved a pair of ordinances on second reading dealing with rezoning two pieces of property.

Mayor Michael-Angelo James conducted the meeting with all four commissioners present.

Resolutions

The lease for the new WPD office is with Johnson Ocmulgee Properties, Inc. at a cost of $1,7500 per month. Chief Tommy Cox told commissioners the Pendleton Street location had reached a state where it no longer can be repaired cosmetically to be fully functional.

“It’s become a structural issue where no more patch and repair roof can do anything,”Cox said. “It’s a 112-year-old building.”

WPD has been approved for a new facility for CID with the latest Special Purpose Local Option Sale Tax funding. Cox said the Alice Street office will serve as a good transition spot until that is built.

City property at 845 and 847 Folks Street were sold to Sidney Sellers for a sealed bid of $2,500 on each parcel. The tracts are .13 and .16 acres, respectively.

Commissioners earlier had approved sale of the land after a first round of bidding, but the purchaser failed to follow through on all stipulations in the sale contract and bids again were sought, Purchasing Director Mamie Jackson said.

Jackson said three pickup trucks, two zero turn mowers and a personal utility vehicle were the items public works was seeking to surplus for sale. The fire department hoses no longer met national standard for equipment.

With the holiday adjustment, commissioners now will meet at 3 p.m. in a planning and information session followed by their regular business meeting at 5 p.m. September 2 in City Hall.

Ordinances

The first ordinance passed changed the property at 910 Berth Street between Byck and Sylvan streets from R-50 Residential to R-50 MH Residential Moble Home.

The second changed the parcel at 406 Gilmore Street between Drane and Pendergast streets from R-50HD Historic to C-2 Highway Commercial. A local church plans to establish a faith-based, shelter for adult men on the property. Each had a first reading at a meeting, August 7.
