The Waycross City Commission and Ware County School Board approved rollback millage rates last week that will trim the tax bills of property owners for 2025.
City Commissioners voted Wednesday, August 20 to approve a proposed rate of 8.555 mils after a public hearing in City Hall.
The School Board approved a proposed rate of 11.502 during a called meeting Thursday morning, August 21 at the board offices.
The Ware Commission will meet at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 27) in Suite 201 of the Administration Building, 305 Oak Street, to consider its proposal of 11.502.
The meeting is open to the public.
Commissioners Shawn Roberts, Katrena Felder and Alvin Nelson approved two readings of the ordinance to set the millage rate.
Commissioner Sheinita Bennett was absent.
The city’s millage represents a drop of .193 mils or 2.49 percent less in tax revenue ($103,384) over last year’s 8.748 rate.
The city is expected to still realize $4.048 million in maintenance and operation taxes compared to $4.151 million in 2024.
The School Board’s rate is .270 less than last year’s 14.000 mark for a decrease of $226,161 or 1.38 percent.
The schools expect to have $16.152 million compared to $16.378 in 2024.
Ware County’s presented rate is .234 less than last year’s 11.773 figure for a decrease of $182,389 or 1.37 percent.
The county expects to realize $13.272 million from its millage.
Proceeds from millage rates are included in a municipality’s general fund.
