First Friday fest returns Sept. 5 Waycross begins the fall and winter portion of its First Friday celebrations at 5 p.m. September 5 throughout downtown.

The monthly festivals with the Downtown Waycross Merchants Association will feature bounce houses, vendors, music, merchant specials and more for the community.

Raulerson earns educational grant The women of Delta Zeta chapter of Phi Delta Kappa national educational sorority have selected Alyssa Cheyenne Raulerson as the recipient of its 20242025 scholars hip award.

The grant is given to a student who is majoring in education and has been accepted in the Teacher Education Program at a college or university. Raulerson currently is enrolled at South Georgia State College majoring in Early Childhood Education.

She is scheduled to student teach in the spring.

Senior Dance slated Sept. 13

The Ware County Recreation Department will hold a Senior Dance from 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday, September 13 at the Trembling Earth Complex, 2110 Cecil Brown Drive.

Admission is $7 per person and light refreshments will be served. Doors open at 6 p.m.

DJ Fred Hand will be playing all the oldies and there will be a 50-50 raffle. Call (912) 2874488.

Heartburn forum set Sept. 19 Memorial Satilla Health will host a Heartburn to Health seminar at noon, Friday, September 19 at the Hospital Annex, 1800 Alice Street.

General surgeons Dr. David Wykstra and Dr. Sigismund Lee with Memorial Satilla Specialists — Advanced Surgery, discuss surgery preparation and what to expect during recovery for treatment of the condition.

Aging council sets meeting today The Aging Advisory Council of the Southern Georgia Regional Commission will meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 27 at the Nashville Community Center, 102 N. Jefferson Street.

Elections board meets Sept. 2 The Ware County Board of Elections and Registration holds its next monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 2 in the Ware County Administration Building 305 Oak Street.

The meeting, which is a week earlier than normal in the month, is open to the public.

Senior health fair, farmer’s market The Bacon County Senior Center will hold a Health Resource Fair and Senior Farmer’s Market, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m, Friday, August 29 at 504 N. Pierce Street in Alma.

Bacon County Hospital will offer free screenings while other agencies and organizations will be available with information geared toward seniors. Lunch from Subway and beverages will be available to the first 100 attendees.

Talki Foundation to meet Sept. 2 The Talki Foundation’s monthly support group for diabetics and their caregivers meets at 7 p.m., the first Tuesday of every month in the Community Room at the Railway Express Agency, 315 Plant Avenue.

The support group, called 912 Diabetes Initiative, provides educational resources and a chance to connect with others. Talki Foundation president and founder Charlie Komons facilitates the monthly meeting which is hosted by Memorial Satilla Health.

The non-profit foundation, is dedicated to assisting low-income diabetic patients in Georgia. The foundation achieves this by raising funds to purchase federally funded insulin.

DWMA schedules special Halloween The Downtown Waycross Merchants Association (DWMA) will hold Trick-or-Treat among its businesses along with a community Trunk-or-Treat along the streets of dowtown from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, October 31.

Bowen family has reunion on Sept. 7 Descendants of Mark and William Hendry Bowen will hold a family reunion at Sunday, September 7 at the First Baptist Church activity building, 670 E. Main Street, Blackshear.

Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. Attendees should bring a covered dish of choice among a meat, vegetable or dessert along with serving utensils. All other items will be supplied.
