Special to The Beacon NAHUNTA — A Jesup man recently released from prison was captured after fleeing on foot from a traffic stop early Wednesday morning.

Otis Doomes III, 42, of Jesup, was one of three arrested along with Melvin D. Jackson III, 37, of Allenhurst, Ga., and Danaysia Shantese Houston, 32, of Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Doomes was located and apprehended near the stop after fleeing on foot from the backseat of the 2022 GMC Acadia. He was taken into custody without incident.

Additional units responded as per protocol, including Brantley County Sheriff Len Davis, his deputies and investigators. Inv estigators deployed a drone to assist in the search of Doomes.

The incident occured August 20 at approximately 1 a.m., when the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression & Intelligence Unit (CSIU) K 9 team conducted the traffic stop for speeding (62 mph in a 45 mph zone) along U.S. Highway 301. During the stop, Detective Brandon Todd, commander of the CSIU, observed indicators suggesting more than a routine traffic violation. Detective Todd requested an additional unit, and a deputy from the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office quickly arrived to assist.

As the search of the vehicle began, Doomes fled on foot. It was later determined Doomes had been released from prison only weeks earlier and has an extensive history of drug distribution.

He has been charged with Possession of a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance With Intent to Distribute and Obstructing or Hindering Law Enforcement Officers.

A search of the vehicle uncovered over one pound of suspected marijuana and multiple drug-related objects. The driver, Melvin D. Jackson III, 37, of Allenhurst, Ga., who also has an extensive drug history, was arrested for the Manufacture, Deliver, Sell, Distribute, etc. or Possess With Intent to Distribute Flunitrazepam.

All three suspects were transported to the Brantley County Jail for booking procedures. The Nahunta CSIU is working closely with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to continue investigations into the activities of both Doomes and Jackson.

The Georgia Department of Community Supervision has been notified, and a parole warrant will be issued for Doomes.

Mayor Marty Lee expressed his appreciation for Sheriff Davis, his deputies, and investigators.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of Sheriff Davis and his team,” said Lee “They always respond without hesitation when called, and their partnership is critical to our success. Working together as one team makes Brantley County and the City of Nahunta safer for our citizens.”

The mayor also praised the Nahunta Police Department’s efforts.

“I am extremely pleased with the ongoing efforts of the Nahunta Police Department and the CSIU team in combating illegal drugs and taking felons off the streets,” added Lee. “Their dedication is making Nahunta a better place to live, work and raise our children.”

The Nahunta Police Department remains committed to proactive policing and strong interagency partnerships that keep dangerous drugs and repeat offenders out of the community.
