No vote needed for Hoboken mayor, council

HOBOKEN — Six of the seven-member Hoboken City Council will return after qualifying for the November 4 General Election.

HOBOKEN — Six of the seven-member Hoboken City Council will return after qualifying for the November 4 General Election.

Mayor Joey Crews and council members Greg Buie, Kenneth Jordan, Jr., Amy Lee, James Ray and Mary Stone each qualified. The mayor was unopposed.

The lone newcomer to the council will be Phillip King II, who will fill the seat vacated by Robin Helmuth, who decided not to run.

An election would have been needed if the mayor’s seat was challenged or more than six candidates qualifiy for council seats.

“The City of Hoboken had just enough candidates to qualify for city council not to have to hold an election,” said longtime City Clerk Linda Henderson. “The City of Hoboken will not have a city General Election in November.”

According to Henderson, all of the candidates will be sworn into office at the first meeting in January 2026.
