Speed bumps have been installed on Tyre Bridge Road in the City of Patterson in response to safety concerns raised by residents who live in the community.
Public Works Superintendent Tyler Stokes and his employees installed the speed bumps Monday in an area of the roadway about mid-way between the four-way stop at Tyre Bridge, Peach Avenue and Lucas Street in front of Macedonia Baptist Church and the three-way stop at the intersection of Tyre Bridge Road and Smiley Street.
Mayor Dedi Thomas and Stokes announced the speed bumps had been delivered at last Thursday’s Patterson City Council meeting.
The city advertised a public hearing to receive input on the new speed bumps, but no one was present for the hearing.
Over the past couple of years, the gallery has featured residents from the Tyre Bridge neighborhood.
Residents of the community have repeatedly expressed concerns about speeding and safety issues in the neighborhood in recent years.
They say the concerns are more urgent following the death of a young child there recently.
Logan Sharpe, 7, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle on Tyre Bridge Road May 19.
A Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) review earlier this year had recommended installing rumble strips, installing larger stop signs and stop ahead warning signs and striping double lines on the roadway. All of that has been done.
However, residents had continued to insist more be done. That led to the placement of the speed bumps.
The City of Patterson made clear that they will not be held liable for any damage to vehicles going over them once in place.
