Terry and Mary Nell Herrin were recently presented with a flag certificate by the Altamaha Chapter Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) in Jesup. The chapter presents the certificate annually to a business, government or individual that prominently and correctly displays the American flag. The Herrins were recognized for their extensive, well-kept and presented flag display at their home on Trudie Road in Pierce County.
The display features flags for all branches of the service and for prisoners of war and the missing in action. The flags are lighted for display at night. Herrin, a veteran of Vietnam, said he was inspired to create the memorial after seeing his fellow Vietnam soldiers did not receive a proper welcome home after their service in the war. Mrs. Herrin said she did extensive research on the proper way to establish, maintain and exhibit the flags in the display.
After his military service, Mr. Herrin served as a Ranger with the Georgia Forestry Commission. Judge Franklin Rozier Jr., President of the Altamaha Chapter, presented the certificate to Terry and Mary Nell Herrin. The Altamaha Chapter SAR is based in Jesup and serves the counties along the Altamaha River basin, including Pierce County.
The SAR is a patriotic and fraternal organization dedicated to maintaining and extending the institutions of American freedom, an appreciation for true patriotism, a respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship. The SAR is a men’s organization whose membership is comprised of descendants of Revolutionary war soldiers and those who helped the war effort.
