Qualifying opens for city seats

Three announce in Districts 3, 4

Qualifying for four seats on the Waycross City Commission continues through the close of business Friday, August 22 in the office of City Clerk Jackie Powell.

Commission seats in Districts 1, 2 and 3 are up in their normal election cycle while the District 4 seat needs to be filled with a special election following the death of Diane Hopkins in late January.

Two people have announced they will seek the District 4 post and another has in District 3.

William Tompkins announced in March in a post on Facebook his intention to seek the seat. He has had campaign signs related to his candidacy around the district for a number of months.

Linda Titus will hold a “meet ‘n’ greet” Saturday afternoon in Monroe Park to introduce herself to citizens.

King Goree announced last week he’ll seek the District 3 seat.

Shawn Roberts, Sheinita Bennett and Katrena Felder are the incumbents in Districts 1-3, respectively.

None of the three has so far publicly announced intentions on seeking another term.

Candidates can file from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. daily through Friday in Powell’s City Hall office.

Fee is $288, which is three percent of a commissioner’s annual salary. Qualifying began Tuesday.

Roberts won his post last December in the runoff of a special election held following the death of longtime District 1 Commissioner Norman Davis in April, 2024.

Bennett and Felder were elected in the November, 2021 General Election. Each of the three sitting commissioners is a first-time officeholder.

Early voting for the four city offices as well as that for Georgia Public Service and a local Floating Local Option Sales Tax referendum will be October 14-30 at the board of elections office, 408 Tebeau Street.

Hours will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.5 p.m. on the two Saturdays during the period.

City residents registered by the close of business Monday, October 6 will be eligible to cast a ballot.

Voting election day will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at city and Ware County locations.
