DOUGLAS — Ninthranked Pierce County suffered its first loss of the season here Saturday against Coffee High falling 9-8.
PCHS was scheduled to play in Waynesboro Saturday at the Burke County tournament, which was cancelled. The matchup with the Lady Trojans came via a rainout previously.
Pierce County hosted Camden County Tuesday, August 19. The Lady Bears travel today (Wednesday, August 20) to Class 5A fifthranked South Effingham and Thursday, August 21 to Class 4A sixth-ranked Wayne County.
PCHS will host Class A DI second-ranked Jeff Davis Monday, August 25. Region 3-AA play kicks off Tuesday, August 26 at Tattnall County with thirdranked Appling County visiting Thursday, August 28.
The Lady Bears (5-1) scored twice in the top of the seventh on Kaylee Figueroa’s (3-for-3) twoout, two-run homer to make things interesting.
Coffee (4-1) scored two runs in the first inning against Carley Sloan (6 IP, 13 H, 9 R, 7 E, 1 K, 3 BB).
PCHS finally got on the board in the top of the third inning scoring four runs off Karlee Thomas (4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 0 BB).
The Lady Bears scored on a run-scoring double by Lanie Mai (2for-4), a two-run double by Taylor Tomlinson (1for-4), and Figueroa’s sacrifice fly to take a short-lived 4-2 lead.
The Lady Trojans evened the score at 4-all in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Imori Paulk on the 10th pitch of the at bat.
PCHS broke the tie in the top of the fourth getting a solo homer from Zoe O’Berry (1-for-3) and a run-scoring double off the bat of Mai for a 6-4 lead.
Coffee claimed the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Trojans scored off an error and a tworun double for a 7-6 advantage.
They added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a runscoring single and a sacrifice fly.
