The Brantley County Board of Educ ation discussed/voted on the following agenda items during its Thursday, August 7 work session and Monday August 11 monthly meeting.
• 2-way radio antenna: The board approved the bid of $10,069.53 from Mobile Communications America in Waycross.
The purchase will be funded by the Transportation Department.
•Hood/Grille for Bus 24-08: Board members approved the purchase of a hood/grille for Bus 24-08 from Yancey Bus Sales and Services for a price of $7,765.51.
The purchase will be funded by the Transportation Department.
• Coastal Plains High School Agreement: The board approved an agreement with Coastal Plains High School.
Coastal Plains (CPHS) offers numerous opportunities for students: (1) Program - students must be registered at their high school and approved to attend CPHS (students who are under the age of 18; or students who are 18 and over but do not have a dropout end status; (2) Credit Recovery students have to be approved by their day school to take one or two courses for credit recovery. There is an associated cost to participate; (3) Traditional - students who enroll directly with CPHS (Students who are 18 and older AND have a dropout end status from the last school attended) are eligible to enroll directly with CPHS.
Tuition is 100% free for traditional students who enroll with Coastal Plains full time.
• Primary/Elementary Schools Handbook Amendment: Board members approved an amendment for the 2025 Primary/Elementary Schools Handbook.
• Wonders Reading Program for Atkinson Elementary School’s 4th- and 5th-grade students: The board approved the purchase of the Wonders Reading Program from McGraw Hill at a cost not to exceed $11,473.07 and paid for through General Funds.
The program is a comprehensive K-6 English Language Arts program designed to help students develop strong reading, writing and communication skills. It aligns with the Common Core State Standards and focuses on building knowledge, academic vocabulary, and close reading skills.
The program offers a variety of resources, including digital tools, leveled readers, and support for English Language Learners.
• Textbooks for Waynesville Primary School: Board members approved the purchase of textbooks from HMH Education Company at a cost of $11,024.25.
Funding will come from the General Fund.
• Renaissance software subscription renewal: The board approved the renewal subscription for the use of Renaissance software for $28,010.06.
Renaissance provides various educational software subscriptions focused on reading, math and early literacy. Renaissance also offers professional learning resources and aligns its products with various federal funding streams for K-12 education.
Funding will come from Title 1 and the General Fund.
• FY26 Sports Medicine services contract: Board members approved the FY26 Sports Medicine services contract through Southeast Georgia Health System in the amount of $30,387 for athletic trainers.
Funding will be through the General Fund.
• FY26 Local Board Training Plan: The board approved the FY26 Local Board Training Plan.
By statute, each local board of education and each governing board of other local units of administration shall adopt a training program for members of such boards that includes, as a minimum, such training program and requirements established by the State Board of Education and must incorporate any revisions adopted by the State Board into the local training program within three months of such adoption (O.C.G.A. § 20-2-230 (2)).
• Annual Instructional software program licenses for Nahunta Elementary School: Board members approved the annual Instructional software licenses for Edmentum-Study Island ($3,805.50) and IXL ($$3,750) at a total cost of $7,555.50.
Funding will come from Title 1 and the General Fund.
• HVAC units: The board approved the purchase of HVAC units from Mingledorff’s at a cost of $64,110.
Funding will come from the Maintenance Department.
• Contract agreement with the Brantley County Board of Commissioners: Board members approved the contract for 4-H program assistant Crista Graham.
• Convection oven for Nahunta Elementary School: The board approved the purchase of convection oven from Mobile Fixture at a cost of $12,098.
A convection oven has a fan and exhaust system with the fan blowing hot air which surrounds the food so it cooks evenly and more quickly.
Funding will come from the School Nutrition Program.
• Firewall Support and Services renewal: Board members approved the renewal contract, on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia recommendation at a cost of $28,008.
Firewall support and services encompass a range of offerings designed to help maintain, optimize and secure network infrastructure using firewalls. These services can include proactive monitoring, incident management, configuration management and expert support to address.
Funding will be through the Technology Department.
• Study Island for Atkinson Elementary School: The board approved the purchase of Study Island from Edmentum at a cost of $3,937.56 through AES Instructional Funds.
Students who use Study Island scored higher on the state math test and were more likely to perform at the proficient or highly proficient level than comparable peers who did not use Study Island.
• Instruction software programs for Hoboken Elementary School: Board members approved the purchase of BrainPOP ($4,500), Progress Learning ($4,214.30) and Explore Learning’s Reflex and Frax ($5,231.33) at a total cost of $13,945.63.
Funding will be from HES Instructional Funds.
