Dockery declares candidacy for GA state seat

Pierce County Middle School educator Michael Dockery has announced his candidacy for the Georgia State House of Representatives District 176 seat.

Dockery, a Republican, currently lives in Waycross and teaches at Pierce County Middle School. The District 176 seat is currently held by Waycross attorney and fellow Republican James Burchett.

Dockery was born and raised in Coffee County. His parents were also educators and Dockery says they instilled in him integrity, a strong work ethic and commitment to serving others.

Dockery graduated from Coffee High School and The Citadel. He began his career in public education upon completing his studies at The Citadel and his first job was in Charleston, where he met his wife, Monica. After marrying, the couple eventually relocated to South Georgia. Together they are raising their daughter, Maggie, in Waycross.

“My work as an educator has not only been a profession— it’s been a calling,” says Dockery. ”It has shaped the way I approach leadership: with patience, accountability, and a belief in the potential of every person I serve.”

Dockery elaborates further on his campaign website, saying, “I believe in transparent government, responsible spending, strong schools, good roads, safe communities and protecting our rights. I’m not running to be something— I’m running to do something. To be accessible, to listen, and to carry your voice with conviction. Public service isn’t new to me— it’s how I was raised, it’s how I live, and it’s how I plan to lead. This campaign isn’t about me—it’s about us. Our home. Our future. Our shared stake in making this district the best place to live, work, raise a family, and grow old with dignity.”

Georgia House District 176 includes a sliver of southern Coffee County, all of Atkinson and Lanier counties, a large portion of Ware County, and a small section of northeastern Lowndes County.

The qualifying period for the 2026 election cycle is March 2, 2026 to March 6, 2026. The primary is May 19, 2026 with the general election following on November 3, 2026.
