HAZLEHURST — Pierce County Middle School closed out its pre-season schedule with a final tournament in Hazlehurst.
The Lady Bears “A” squad won 2 of 3 games August 9 beating Appling County Middle School 6-4 and host Jeff Davis Middle School 18-3 before falling 12-11 against West Laurens Middle School.
PCMS started tournament play July 26 in Vidalia winning 3 of 4 games. The Lady Bears beat Wheeler County Middle School 7-0, Appling Middle 6-3 and won a third game against an unknown foe, 3-2. They were no-hit in a 3-0 loss to Richmond Hill Middle School.
At an August 2 tournament, Pierce Middle downed Wayne County Middle School 8-1 and blanked Brantley County Middle School 11-0 on a one-hitter by Skylar Whitaker.
PCMS’s “B” team lost 15-3 to Camden County Middle School and 19-1 to Richmond Hill Middle. The Lady Bears beat Clinch County Middle School 3-1.
Pierce Middle began regular season play this week traveling Tuesday, August 12 to Bacon County Middle. Toombs County Middle School visits Thursday, August 14 at 4:30 p.m.
Bethune Middle School in Folkston visits Tuesday, August 19 for a 4 p.m. first pitch before PCMS heads to Brantley Middle Thursday, August 21 for a 4 p.m. start.

PCMS used a five-run third inning to take control and back Sadie Warren’s five-inning complete game.
The Lady Bears were led by the two-hit performances of London Sweat (2-for-4, double, stole base), Caitlyn Hinnant (2for-3) and Ryleigh Taylor (2for-2, RBI).
Cadence Coldren (1-for-3, RBI, stole base), Korlee Harrelson (1-for-3, double, two RBI) and Warren (1-for-3, triple, RBI) added a hit apiece.
Warren scattered five hits, fanned four and walked three. Only one of the four runs were earned.

The Lady Bears broke away from Jeff Davis Middle using an 11-run explosion in the third inning to end the game via the run rule.
Four players recorded a multi-hit game and all nine batters had at least one hit. Miranda Howard (2-for-3, double, two RBI, stolen base), Warren (2-for-2, triple, two RBI, stolen base), Coldren (2for-3, double, four runs batted in, HBP) and Harrelson (2-for-3, double, two RBI) led the 13hit attack.
Haley Morgan (1-for-2, RBI, HBP, stolen base), Sweat (1-for-3, RBI, HBP, five stole bases), Whitaker (1-for-2, double, three RBIs), Hinnant (1-for-2, stolen base) and Taylor (1-for-3, double, RBI) chipped in.
Sweat tossed all three innings allowing five hits, fanning three and walking two. Two of the three runs scored by the Lady Yellow Jackets were earned.
West Laurens.................12 Lady Bears .....................11 West Laurens scored all 12 runs in the first three innings, the final five following a ninerun second inning by the Lady Bears to get the win.
Whitaker, Warren and Sweat toed the rubber for PCMS. The trio surrendered seven hits, four earned runs and walked seven without recording a strikeout.
The Lady Bears’ 10-hit attack was led by Warren (3-for-3, double, two RBI, stolen base) and Coldren (2-for-3, double, RBI).
Recording one hit each were Sweet (1-for-3), Whitaker (1-for-2, RBI), Howard (1-for-3, home run, two RBI) and Morgan (1for-2, double).
