Rate increase for trash pickup on horizon

Rate increase for trash pickup on horizon

An upcoming rate increase for trash pickup services by Ryland Environmental was discussed at the August 5 work session of the Blackshear city council.

A representative of Ryland was on hand to essentially repeat the information contained in an official communication dated July 8. Due to increased disposal fees at landfills in the surrounding area, cited as having gone up by 50%, Ryland Environmental requested the council approve a rate increase to cover their increased costs.

“Statistically, each household will produce one ton of waste per year,” reads the email, “which will increase our cost $12 per year, per home, or $1 per home per month.”

In an attached letter from Solid Waste Management Authority of Atkinson County, disposal fees for municipal waste disposal have already been increased to $35 per ton.

Blackshear city council voted on the issue at the August 12 regular session. Results of the council’s vote were not yet available when the current edition of

went to press. The council’s decision will be included with other highlights from the regular session in the Aug. 20 edition of The Times.
