JACKSONVILLE — Conrad Allen “Sonny” Sweat, 87 of Jacksonville, Fla., passed peacefully Monday, August 4, 2025.
Born December 16, 1937 in Jacksonville, Fla., Sweat was the second oldest of nine children born to Leon and Merle Sweat. From a young age, he demonstrated a deep sense of responsibility and determination. Sweat left school in the 8th grade to help support his family, going straight to work and never looking back.
He spent most of his life as a self-employed floor installer, specializing in carpet, tile and other flooring. Sweat was known for his skill, work ethic and dedication to doing a job right. His hands and knees bore the marks of an honest living, and his quiet pride in a hard days work was unmistakable.
In March of 1958, he married Ruth McCullough. Together, they shared 17 years of marriage and raised three children, Cynthia Lafanti (Michael), Teresa Wood (John) and Gregory Sweat, Sr. (Jan). Later in life, Sweat entered into a second marriage that lasted 47 years. Its unexpected end brought deep heartache in his later years.
Sweat was the proud grandfather of six and great-grandfather of seven. While he was not always present in every season of his family’s lives, he remained a part of their story and will be remembered with love and respect.
Sweat is survived by two brothers, Clinton Sweat (Joan) and Beryl Sweat (Darlene); a sister, Elaine Guenther (Ernie); as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Merle Sweat; sisters Krystal Holland and Faith Gibson; and brothers Neil Sweat, Cyril Sweat and Don Sweat. He deeply valued his roots and the lifelong connections he shared with his siblings and extended family.
Sweat was known for his gentle nature, quiet strength, and a wonderful sense of humor that stayed with him until the very end. Even in difficult times, he could find a way to bring a smile or spark a laugh- often when it was needed most.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and hospice nurses who provided exceptional care, compassion and patience during Sweat’s final days. Their kindness was invaluable in supporting a stubborn man who fiercely valued his independence.
He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, resilience, warmth and wit. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who were lucky enough to share in his stories, his laughter, and the life he built through sheer determination.
