River cleanup to be held Sept. 27

Special to the Beacon

Dumping and littering are problems throughout the Satilla River watershed.

Whether it starts in a yard, street, or outside a dumpster, once heavy rains come, trash is carried to streams and rivers. Litter impacts recreational paddlers, boaters and fishermen, riverfront properties, wildlife, and downstream communities.

Each year, the Satilla Riverkeeper hosts an annual, river-wide cleanup to target the chronic trash found at popular access points to the river.

This year’s cleanup will be at 9 a.m., Saturday, September 27 at nine locations along the river.

Volunteers will be cleaning at Burnt Fort Landing, 121 Landing, US 301 Landing, Jamestown Landing, Highway 64 Landing, Highway 99 Landing, Ava Strickland Lightsey Landing (Hwy 82), Woodbine Landing, and Highway 158 Landing.

Those interested in cleaning up at another site and want to volunteer as a site leader, email Lex Bowick at [email protected]. The collection point for all trash will be the dumpster at 121 Landing.

Volunteers with boats or kayaks are encouraged to bring them for cleanup on the water.
