First days come all too soon

Sandy Head Publisher

[email protected] Monday was the first day of school and I felt mixed emotions.

I have had the privilege— and sometimes the daunting task—of taking care of all my grandchildren before they start school. I am blessed with five grandbabies. Some days are more challenging than others. Any given day I could have one — or five — of them. Starting this new chapter in my life brings about mixed feelings.

There were no requests like 'snuggle with me a little longer, Nana,' or 'can we watch Dinosaurs?' or 'can we make pancakes?' My drive to work this week has also been quiet and somewhat lonely. Early Monday morning, I tex-ted all of them, wishing them a great day and looking forward to seeing pictures of them ready for their first day. The pictures started coming in, with the parents telling me how one wanted to cry, one was eager to go and another care less either way.

The baby of the bunch, River, started pre-K this year. News Editor Jason Deal was there taking pictures for the paper, and right

up to him and gave him a big I must admit, I’m a bit jealous. His parents were excited, and his big sister proudly walked him in. There was a twinge of sadness in his daddy’s voice as he said, “Mama, he walked in and only turned back for a moment, saying, ‘Bye Daddy, I love you.’

This is a new phase for me and his daddy, just as it is for many other parents and grandparents.

All of us have experienced it this week, but please remember buses will be running, and traffic will be a little heavier than usual, so be careful and slow down.

You can bet I will be watching the clock each day waiting for 2 p.m., eager to hear about their adventures.

I can hardly wait.

My last grandbaby Riyer ran is off to school,

couldn't hug.
