First Baptist Church renewed a tradition Wednesday, July 23 that dates back nearly 40 years with its annual fellowship luncheon for new teachers in Ware County. More than four dozen new members of the local school system were the guests of the church’s membership, who served a barbecue lunch before each teacher received a specially prepared gift as well as a door prize from the dozens donated by local businesses. Mike Whalen, First Baptist’s Transitional Pastor, welcomed the gathering, which included members of the Ware County Board of Education, school principals and other administrators as well as central office staff. The vocal group “Cornerstone” from Trinity United Methodist Church offered songs during the luncheon. Teachers are in their classrooms this week with the first day of school for students Friday, August 8.
