A new culvert will be installed on Hacklebarney Road near its intersection with Cason Road at the Whitney Lakes Subdivision.

An advertisement for bids is included in this week’s public notices.

County Chairman Neal Bennett said the new culvert will help correct a major infrastructure problem with the road.

“The roadway is compromised there and one lane has been closed since Hurricane Helene last year,” Bennett said.

The road washed out at the dam near the lake in Whitney Lakes.

Bennett said that while one lane has been stabilized, another heavy rainfall event could take out the entire roadway.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) relief funds will be used for the repairs.

Hacklebarney and Cason Roads are on the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) list and we need to have the culvert issue fixed before the road is paved.

Bennett said the project is one of three currently underway or about to begin in the county.

He said bids are also being received on the Timber Lane/Farr’s project (see related story) and work is about to be complete on the Blue Lake Road repairs off College Avenue.

The Blue Lake Road culvert failed during heavy rains from Tropical Storm Debby last year.
