Closing ceremony held for Nahunta’s 100-year celebration
The City of Nahunta wrapped up eight days of celebrating 100 years Monday with a closing ceremony.
A large crowd attended the momentous occasion. The City recognized BCHS alum Jaylin Williams, who is currently playing in the NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks, the Key to the City.
Also, the Brantley County High School’s 2025 Class A DI state champion Lady Herons and Herons tennis programs were each presented a Key to the City.
Williams was unable to attend, but his mother, Shantel Williams, accepted on his behalf. Mayor Marty Lee spoke on his accomplishments and how proud the City of Nahunta was to know they have such an outstanding citizen who has gone out into the world to do great things.
Even though Williams wasn’t there in person, he left a video message thanking the City of Nahunta. He was humbled by the honor bestowed upon him.
“I want to thank my family and friends for supporting my basketball career,” Williams said. “I appreciate you, I love you and I'll be home soon.”
Tennis coach Patrick Stieve was also recognized for leading his program to a sweep of the titles. It was the second straight championship for the Lady Herons.
The Herons posted a 25-2 record with the Lady Herons finishing 22-5.
“This was a testament to their dedication to the program,” Stieve said. “This is not an easy sport to play and takes long hours. We have to venture out to find the best competition we can find.”
At the end of the celebration, each member of the Nahunta City Council spoke on how grateful they were Nahunta lasted an entire century. They were also thrilled to bring the centennial to a successful and satisfying conclusion.
There was a question about what to do on order to prepare for either the 150th or 200th anniversary. It was answered by City Clerk Angie Wirth.
“We’ll leave a manual,” she said.
