Dr. Husain speaks at Exchange

Special to the WJH The Waycross Exchange Club of Waycross welcomed Dr. Husain Abbas, a bariatric surgeon, as its guest speaker at a recent weekly luncheon meeting.

The event, attended by club members and guests, featured a compelling presentation on the transformative impact of bariatric surgery, followed by a question-and-session.

Dr. Abbas, a board-certified general surgeon with more than 20 years experience, specializes in weight loss surgery and minimally invasive robotic techniques. With offices in Waycross, Jacksonville and Mandarin, Fla., he is a leading figure in the fight against obesity, serving patients across southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.

Club president-elect Kirby McSwain introduced Dr. Abbas, praising his dedication to improving lives through innovative surgical care.

During his talk, Dr. Abbas highlighted how bariatric surgery, which modifies the digestive system, helps individuals with severe obesity achieve significant weight loss and improve conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnea.

“Obesity is a complex disease, but with the right approach, we can achieve life-changing results,” Dr. Abbas told the audience. He emphasized the importance of personalized treatment plans, combining surgical and medical strategies to address each patient’s unique needs.

Drawing from his extensive experience, including over 500 robotic surgeries, Dr. Abbas explained how advanced technologies like the daVinci robotic system allow for smaller incisions, faster recovery, and improved outcomes.

Attendees were particularly impressed by Dr. Abbas’s patient-centered approach and his ability to explain complex medical concepts in an accessible way.

Dr. Abbas, who graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed a fellowship at the University of Florida, also shared insights from his role as the medical director of the bariatric program at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.

He discussed the importance of comprehensive support, including pre- and post-surgery counseling, to ensure long-term success for his patients.

Dr. Abbas’s presentation resonated with the club’s mission to promote healthier communities, sparking discussions about the growing need for effective obesity treatments.
