With much the same fanfare of its festivities in Waycross two months ago, Wawa opened its second store in the city Wednesday, July 16 at 1725 Memorial Drive.

The facility at the bustling intersection of Memorial Drive and Brunswick Highway, follows the outlet at 1810 South Georgia Parkway that opened May 15.

The Pennsylvania-based chain’s newest convenience store opened its doors to the public at 8 a.m. ahead of the official celebration and related activities beginning at 11:30.

Early customers were given Tshirts while they lasted, and free hot coffee was available.

Included in the later part of the opening were remarks from corporate representatives as well as local officials.

Members of the Waycross Fire Department and Waycross Police Department again squared off in the “Hoagies for Heroes” sub sandwichbuilding contest. WPD personnel claimed a second straight trophy in the five-minute sandwich competition.

The event concluded with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

Like its companion to the west, the Memorial Drive location is open 24 hours.

Wednesday’s local celebration paired with one in Valdosta, where the company opened an outlet at 4598 North Valdosta Road just off I-75.

Wednesday’s openings bring to nine the number of Wawa stores currently operational in the state. The first Georgia store opened November 14, 2024 in Bainbridge with other outlets following in Jesup, Hinesville, Savannah, Brunswick and Pooler.

The company said it plans to have more than two dozen outlets open in the state in the next five to eight years.

It’s expansion plans call for opening three to four stores a year through the early 2030s.

Members of the Waycross Police Department gather with others for the trophy presentation after winning the “Hoagies for Heroes” sub sandwich-building contest. WPD also won the competition at the grand opening of the Wawa on South Georgia Parkway in May. SPECIAL PHOTO

As part of the openings, Wawa is offering a “Summer of Sandwiches” promotion with all its hoagies, clubs, quesadillas, wraps, and chicken offerings priced at $6 and less.
