U.S. Marshals capture Boyd

Shooting suspect taken into custody in Charlotte, N.C.

The second suspect in the June 28 shooting at a Waycross Police Officer during a vehicle pursuit was arrested last week in Charlotte, N.C., and remains in jail there, Waycross Police Department Major Danny Hampton said Monday.

Kamar Anthony Boyd, 20, of Waycross, was arrested about 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, by the United States Marshals Service. Hampton said Boyd is awaiting completion of the extradition process between North Carolina and Georgia for his return to Waycross.

WPD arrested the other suspect who was at large — Daquan Jerrell White, 20, of Waycross — Tuesday, July 8 in the 300 block of Garlington Heights.

Both Boyd and White face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer. Hampton said the investigation of the incident remains active and additional charges are possible.

The two also are suspects in other violent crimes with additional felony charges expected, authorities said earlier.

Hampton said U.S. Marshals were able to locate Boyd in Charlotte through their investigation leading to his arrest.

White was located late Monday, July 7. Negotiators spent nearly two hours into the early morning hours of July 8 trying to persuade the suspect to emerge from the Waycross apartment.

Finally, the WPD SWAT team entered the residence around 1 a.m., and found White hiding in the apartment’s ventilation system.

The June 28 incident began with an attempted traffic stop around 2:15 a.m., of a vehicle linked to multiple felony crimes in Waycross. The driver of the vehicle fled, prompting a pursuit during which suspects inside the vehicle opened fire on police.

The pursuing officer’s patrol car was struck several times by bullets, but no injuries were reported.

The suspects later abandoned the vehicle in a southside Waycross neighborhood and fled on foot. A 15-year-old juvenile was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, with additional felony charges pending, authorities said.

A reward was offered for any information that led to the whereabouts of the suspects.
