Statewide Bible Reading
NAHUNTA — Churches of Georgia interlocked hands to read and appreciate the Good Book and to acknowledge its lessons know no bounds.
The gathering Monday morning, July 14, of about 20 citizens around the Brantley County Courthouse was for the 7th annual Statewide Bible Reading known as Project 7:14.
Steven Hatcher led Brantley County’s reading of Jeremiah 9-15.
The idea for what is now an annual event which is held at 7:14 a.m. or 7:14 p.m., July 14, was originally brought about by Cochran, Ga., resident Jerri Tuck.
Not only does this precise time ensure the entire Bible is read across the state within the same hours, but it also honors the verse which inspired the event – 2 Chronicles 7:14, which reads, “If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
All 159 Georgia counties participated in the event, which was held at their respective county courthouses. All verses within the Holy Book were read aloud within the state during this period.
Each of the 159 sites read a different book (66 total) resulting in the entire Bible being read across the state of Georgia.
These passages change from year to year to allow each county to focus on a new text each year.
