Pierce County Schools will implement a new security feature at all building entry points on all campuses beginning this school year.
All Pierce County Schools will begin using OpenGate Weapons Detectors when the school year begins August 4.
School Superintendent Dara Bennett sent out an open letter to parents Monday giving information about the new system.
“The OpenGate system is a state-of-the-art weapons detection solution that enhances school safety while minimizing disruption to daily routines,” Bennett said. “The detectors are fast, accurate, and non-invasive—designed to allow students to walk through without emptying their backpacks or removing personal items. This means minimal impact on arrival times while providing an additional layer of protection for everyone in our school community.” The school system approved the purchase of the OpenGate system in April at a cost of $236,000.
Bennett emphasized that the introduction of this technology is not in response to any specific threat
“Our goal is to foster a secure environment where students can focus on learning and personal growth,” Dara Bennett but is part of our proactive approach to school safety.

School administrators and staff have been trained on the proper use of the OpenGate system, and additional information will be provided to students and families during orientation and the first days of school.
Parents with questions about the OpenGate system are asked to call the school principal or contact the district office.
