NAHUNTA — Four Brantley County Volunteer Fire Departments and another from neighboring Charlton County responded to a residential structure fire on Highway 301 South Wednesday.

VFD personnel were toned out at about 5:30 p.m., July 9, to a fire believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. No one was home at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.

A family member living on the property went to check the residence following the strike and discovered an active fire in the laundry room. The individual immediately called 911, and multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters initiated an interior attack and successfully extinguished the fire, containing it to the area of origin.

The Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department is grateful for the rapid response and teamwork demonstrated by local and neighboring agencies.

Agencies assisting at the scene included Hoboken Volunteer Fire Department, Winokur/Charlton County Volunteer Fire Department, Calvary Volunteer Fire Department, Hortense Volunteer Fire Department, Waynesville Volunteer Fire Department, Nahunta Police Department, Brantley County Sheriff’s Office, Brantley EMS, OREMC, and Brantley E911. The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the affected resident.
