Happy birthday to me and my new teenage possession.
Yes, I’ll be working on m y birthday (Tuesd ay, July 15) and today (Wednesday, July 16) when the Brantley Beacon begins its celebration of starting its 13th year.
Many didn’t believe The Beacon would last this long. There has been a lot of blood, sweat and tears shed in keeping this dream alive.
The Beacon also has two siblings —
The Waycross Journal-Herald and The Blackshear Times.
There will be no more.
Sandy and I are thankful for our employees we have who have made this possible.
Except for a bout with COVID the last month and a half of 2021, God has blessed me with good health. Every day I put my feet on the floor I thank the man upstairs.
As for The Brantley Beacon, it was something Sandy and I talked about a lot before the big decision. With no backing from anyone but our shallow pockets, we jumped at the opportunity in hopes of giving you a weekly paper you would enjoy.
In our line of work, it’s hit and miss as to what will sell a newspaper and what want. We’re also battling our demon - social media.
The internet can be good and bad. The good part is sometimes we may get a story idea.
The bad is when people think that is the real source of news. The unfortunate thing is nobody is held accountable for what is posted I write a story full of rumors and the next thing I know is I could end up in court facing a lawsuit. I wish that would happen with social media.
It’s a world-wide thing and not just here in Brantley County.
The good thing about the newsprint business is we record history. Papers are archived with births, deaths, arrests ... some of everything.
Thank you for allowing Sandy and I to be a part of your life. May God bless you and your family.
