Applications available for 101

The City of Waycross is accepting applications for its second installment of th Waycross 101 Academy on the workings of city government.

The free, weeklong session is limited to 40 participants and runs Monday-Friday, July 28August 2.

Classes are 5:30-6:30 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.noon, Saturday.

The program gives residents and business owners age 18-up a behind-the-scenes look at city operations.

Candidates for elective office are ineligible to participate. Attendees may only miss one of the six sessions.

Goal of the program is to:

• empower residents to better access and engage with their local government; • increase awareness of city services, departments, and operational functions;

• foster stronger connections between citizens and city leadership;

• encourage civic participation and build confidence in communicating with elected officials and staff.

Participants will learn through a mix of presentations, hands-on activities, and guided discussions led by the city manager, department directors, staff, and elected officials.

Topics include emergency services and law enforcement, planning and zoning, finance and budgeting, public works and infrastructure, parks and community development, and special projects and initiatives.

Highlights of the program are introduction to the Waycross Charter, municipal budgeting, roles and responsibilities of staff, a question-andanswer session with department heads as well as the Mayor and City Commissioners.
