A city worker clears debris last week from the banks of the drainage canal that runs under Carswell Avenue. The work is part of the city’s preparation for the heavy rains prevalent during the summer months as part of hurricane season, which began June 1 and runs through November. City Manager Ulysses “Duke” Rayford said clearing the canal at Carswell was among nine places around the city identified as central to helping drainage during heavy and/or lengthy storms. The work on Carswell began with the city’s new side-arm mower cutting all the small trees and vegetation above and on the banks of the canal. Representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also recently visited the city to tour the canal system and offer their views on ways to alleviate issues and prevent runoff backing up into city streets and on private property.
