Nahunta adopts budget, approves purchase for NPD

NAHUNTA — City of Nahunta officials adopted their FY26 budget of $3,050,888 during a called meeting.

Council members gathered Monday, June 30 to discuss the proposed budget one final time before passage. Three public hearings were held without a single resident attending.

Meetings were scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, June 23, and at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 25.

The $3,050,888 budget, the biggest in city history, is $740,130 more than the FY25 budget of $2,310,758.

The General Fund budget totals $1,708,457, the Water Fund budget is $375,314, the Sewer Fund budget is $860,567 and the Sanitation budget is $106,550.

The Water and Sewer departments will have sepearate budgets after several years of combined finances. City Clerk Angie Wirth explained the split was required.

She also said the water and waste water operations were also in the budget and have been so since 2018 when the City of Nahunta first went under consent with operators According to Wirth, the General Fund was $1.3 million two months ago and she was able to get through the end of May's revenue showing approximately $75,000.

“I was able to get the numbers almost to the day,' Wirth told members of the council. “Revenues and expenditures have increased.”

She further elaborated the City of Nahunta will have another water rate increase and the rate will go up every year.

The rate increase will be line with national CPI (Consumer Price Index) water and sewer rates. The U.S. CPI is at a current level of 320.58, up from 320.32 last month and up from 313.14 one year ago. This is a change of 0.08% from last month and 2.38% from one year ago.

“We have done everything legally on our side to have this be voted in the budget,” Wirth said.

The council also discussed and voted to purchase of a new patrol truck for the Nahunta Police Department. They accepted the $38,383.88 bid from Dan Vaden for a 2025 Chevy Silverado to replace the 2017 Chevy Tahoe (blown engine) which includes a $3,000 trade-in for the Tahoe.
