Commission approves four Land Use variances

NAHUNTA — Brantley County commissioners gave their approval of four request a variance in a location, a rezoning request and two special exceptions during the Thursday meeting of the commission.

Commissioners heard the request of two of the four applicants during the Tuesday, July 1 public hearing prior to the monthly work session. The applications for approval were delivered by the Planning Commission.

Lois Vassilion’s special exception application was for a dog kennell located at 521 Happy Hollow Road in Hortense on Parcel number B0064E 044.

Vassilion told commissioners during the public hearing her request was for a 920 square foot kennel to house 20 animals. She added the Department of Agriculture had signed off on the structure.

“I’m not interested in having more than 20 animals for overcrowding,” she told commissioners. “It will have an epoxy floor so we can hose it for cleaning and it will have heat and air.”

When asked about the closest neighbor by Commissioner Brian Hendrix, Vassilion said her dwelling and the kennell are located centrally in her seven-acre plot.

“There’s approximately 200-300 yards to her right and 150-200 yards to her left as the closest neighbor,” said County Manager Joey Cason, who visited the property.

Brantley County Clerk of Courts Debbie Sirmans voiced her concern of drainage towards McIntosh Creek running past the property.

“I appreciate what she is doing for animals,” said Sirmans, “but my concern is the waste from washing out the kennell. The waste could enter the creek.”

Vassilion explained the waste will enter into PVC drain pipes and drain into buried barrells outside the structure.

Commissioner Randy Davison suggested possibly putting in a septic tank.

Teramore Development’s requested the rezoning of parcel number B042B 028 & B042 027 located at the intersection of US Hwy 301 and Caney Bay Road Nahunta for a Dollar General.

According to a Teramore Development spokesperson, they would own one-third of an acre of the 2.1283 acres located across from the Friendly Express.

The new Dollar General, the eighth in Brantley County, would be of standard size 10,440 square foot building.

Commissioners approved the request of Mike Hersey for a variance for parcel number HE01 045 located at 4779 Hwy 32 in Hortense.

The variance is for the placement of an ice machine at the post office.

The request of James Westenskow’s application for special exception was for parcel number B043 012 located on Johns Way for a Bed & Breakfast.

According to Cason, it will be a western-style Bed & Breakfast site.
